Here we are at the start of Season 3. We usually take these arbitrary transition points as a cue to do something new or different to promote The Greys. This year we’ve made three changes:

1) We’re now on Twitter
2) We now have a “Tip Jar” to accept donations, however large or small, which will be put towards our hosting fees
3) We’re producing a CD-ROM of Seasons 1 & 2 (plus extras) which will be sent to anyone who donates £5 or more via the Tip Jar.

As a special thank-you to all the people who have supported us so far – whether by commenting on this site, signing up to our Facebook page, or faving us on DeviantART or in other ways – we’re giving away a number of the CDs to our early supporters, free of charge (though there is a £1 postage fee if you can’t collect from us in person). If you think you should be included in this promo and haven’t from us directly, do drop us a line.

The inspiration for this comic comes in part from the ever diminishing thickness of mobile phones and tablets. While they grow ever larger in breadth and height to accommodate their increasingly large touchscreens, there seems to be an counter-effort to reduce the apparent size by making them ever thinner. Of course these things are always a trade-off. A thinner phone means less space for a battery, which means lower battery life.

The irony, of course, is that a large number of users then buy bulky cases which provide extra power and undo the manufacturer’s good work. Or they carry a booster battery pack just in case. And probably a car charger. And a spare mains powered charger. Yes, they’ve saved a few grams with their thinner, lighter phone – but they’ve added many more grams with extra peripherals to compensate for the loss of power.

But there are other sources of inspiration for this comic. Several companies have looked at harvesting energy directly from the radio waves that surround us all. And a commonly suggested solution for the world’s energy woes is to collect solar energy using a satellite, then beam it to Earth in the form of a focused laser or microwave beam. Add all these things together, jumble them up a bit, and this comic is the result.

G1: Is that your new smartphone? Can I take a look?

G2: Yeah, sure

G1: Wow! That must be the thinnest phone I've ever seen

G2: That's because it only has a small battery which it recharges on-the-fly

G1: What? You mean it leeches power out of the radio waves themselves?

G2: Erm…no. It comes with a geostationary charger

G1: A what?

G2: There's a satellite in orbit which can beam power down to a tiny solar cell on the phone via a high intensity laser beam…
…The phone's GPS is used to tell the satellite where to aim…
…All you need to do is press the "Charge" button…

[Scene shows G1 being cut in two by a laser beam from the sky]

G2: …After making sure you're facing in the right direction!
