We’re posting this strip on September 30th 2019 – the 54th anniversary of the first broadcast of “Thunderbirds”. It’s a measure of how much our personal lives have changed since we used to post fortnightly Greys comics, that this was originally being drawn for the 50th anniversary, but has only recently been finished.

We both grew up watching Gerry Anderson’s TV shows. Some of the live action shows, such as Space:1999 we watched during their original runs, but for the Supermarionation classics of Thunderbirds, Stingray (Mark’s favourite) and Captain Scarlet (Vince’s favourite) we were too young to have seen them the first time round, and instead grew up watching repeats. Not that we knew that back then: there’s a certain timelessness to the style and the stories that made them seem like a creation of our time, for our generation. It’s no coincidence that International Rescue’s pilots are named after some of the Project Mercury astronauts: we may have missed out on the original space race, but some semblance of the same wonder and excitement of men launching themselves into adventure atop an oversized firework rushed through us every time we heard the stirring countdown to a Thunderbird’s launch. 5…4…3…2…1.

No wonder there’s still such love for these creations. The current incarnation, “Thunderbirds are Go” is a faithful nod to the original, albeit mostly in CGI. But the use of model shots for a lot of the backgrounds and scenery gives it a wonderful style that still tips its hat to the original. It does keep the countdown, which is still the most thrilling part of each episode.

Then there’s the incredible work of Century 21 Films with their “Thunderbirds 1965” project for the 50th anniversary: a crowdfunded creation of three new episodes using original audio recordings, with film, model and puppetry work that was kept faithful to the techniques used over 50 years ago. Unfortunately there are legal encumbrances that have, so far, prevented a general release of these episodes, but keep an eye on their Twitter account, as they do occasionally show them at special events or stream them online. They’re a must-see for any Supermarionation fan.

As to our cartoon: we’re sure it’s not a very original punchline. No doubt the same gag was used somewhere in the 1960s, but perhaps you could think of our creation as similar to “Thunderbirds 1965”, mixed with a bit of “Thunderbirds are Go”: we’ve made a new cartoon from an old joke – but done so with some modern computer generated imagery.

Nous mettons cette planche en ligne le 30 septembre 2019 pour le 54e anniversaire de la première diffusion de les Sentinelles de l’air. Nous avions prévu la sortie de celle-ci pour le 50e anniversaire, mais nous venons seulement de la terminer. Voilà qui donne la mesure des changements apparus dans nos vies depuis l’époque où nous avions l’habitude de publier un nouvel épisode des Gris toutes les deux semaines.

Nous avons tous les deux grandi en regardant la série de Jerry Anderson. Nous avons regardé des séries classiques comme Cosmos 1999 lors de leur sortie, mais en ce qui concerne les séries de supermarionation, comme les Sentinelles de l’air (la préférée de Mark) et Capitaine Scarlet (la préférée de Vince) nous étions trop jeunes pour avoir vu autre chose que des rediffusions. Mais nous ne le savions pas à l’époque : le genre bénéficie d’une certaine intemporalité et les histoires nous laissaient l’impression d’être contemporaines à notre génération. Ce n’est pas un hasard si les pilotes d’International Rescue portent les même noms que ceux du programme Mercury : nous avons peut-être manqué les débuts de la course à l’espace, mais durant le générique des Sentinels de l’air, nous étions saisis d’une excitation et d’un émerveillement semblable à celui de ces hommes perchés sur une gigantesque bombe volante et sur le point d’être catapultés vers l’aventure. 5… 4… 3… 2… 1…

Pas étonnant qu’il existe encore un engouement pour ce style de créations. Son actuelle incarnation, Thunderbirds are go, bien que principalement réalisée en images de synthèse est un hommage fidèle à l’original. L’utilisation de maquettes pour de nombreux décors et arrière-plans est un coup de chapeau adressé à l’ancêtre. Le compte à rebours est conservé, et est toujours la partie la plus excitante de chaque épisode.

Century 21 films a réalisé un travail incroyable avec son projet Thunderbirds 1965 à l’occasion du 50e anniversaire de la série. Le projet, issu d’un financement participatif, utilise des enregistrements audio originaux avec des images, des maquettes et des marionnettes qui reproduisent fidèlement les techniques utilisées il y a cinquante ans. Malheureusement, des problèmes juridiques ont empêché une large diffusion de ces épisodes, mais gardez un œil sur leur compte Twitter : ils sont parfois montrés à l’occasion d’un événement particulier. Ils sont un « must » pour tout fan de supermarionation.

Quant à notre bédé, nous somme sûrs que sa chute n’est pas très originale. Le même gag a sans doute été utilisé dans les années soixante, mais peut-être notre planche est-elle similaire à Thunderbirds 1965 : un nouveau travail tiré d’une vieille idée, et réalisée grâce à des ordinateurs modernes.

Réellement Rigoureusement Ridicule

Voici la première planche des Gris mise en ligne depuis plus de quatre ans ! Le pire est qu’elle était terminée à 90 % dès cette époque, mais elle est restée tout ce temps dans nos cartons pendant que nous donnions la priorité à Elvie (après tout, c’est ce qui nous permet de financer l’hébergement de ce site). Avec la diffusion du dernier épisode de Game Of Thrones, programmée aux États-Unis dans seulement quelques heures, il nous a semblé que c’était le bon moment pour terminer les 10 % manquant – ce qui a principalement consisté en la création d’un œuf de Pâque qui est déjà l’un de mes favoris.

Alors que le titre de cette planche, Réellement rigoureusement ridicule, était déjà choisi il y a quatre ans, j’aime à penser que nous avons réellement mis un temps rigoureusement ridicule pour terminer cet épisode – principalement dû au report constant de la production d’un œuf de Pâque, réellement, rigoureusement ridicule. Mais cette fois au bon sens du terme !

Bottes de Yéti (Revisitée)

L’un des projets sur lesquels nous avons travaillé ces dernier mois est la recréation de quelques unes de nos plus vieilles B.D. – principalement celles qui ont vue le jour sous Corel Draw il y a vingt ans – forts de nos cinq années d’expérience avec Inkscape. Voici la première de ces planches revisitées, ce qui est en fin de compte la quatrième fois que cet ouvrage est remis sur le métier d’une manière ou d’une autre.

La premier fois, c’était pour sa création sous Corel Draw, pour être utilisé autant comme B.D. que comme carte de vœux. Puis en 2009, nous l’avons converti au format SVG et nettoyé, modifiant les proportions pour l’adapter au nouveau format choisi pour nos B.D. en ligne. La troisième version était assez proche de celle que vous avez sous les yeux ; elle avait été créée pour l’anthologie « Des Universe, Year One » en 2013. Cette version a ensuite été adaptée pour servir de carte de vœux.

Essentiellement, cette dernière version diffère de celle de 2013 par le fait que nos Gris sont habillés. Pourquoi avons nous ressenti le besoin de faire cela ? En plus de mettre ces planches à jour, nous les avons dotées de tous nouveaux œufs de Pâque, et la modification a donc été faire pour coller aux case supplémentaires du fichier Inkscape. Avec un poids-mémoire six fois supérieur à celui de l’originale, vous avez dû soupçonner que le nouvel œuf de Pâque ajoute plus qu’un peu à cet qui est par ailleurs une simple case.

D’autres planche revisitées arrivent – dè que nous aurons terminé ce nouvel œuf de Pâque !

Our First Profitable Year!

‘The Greys’ has never turned a profit. Not even close to one. We’ve earned a small amount from merchandise sales and some donations, but the total amount we’ve made over the past six years wouldn’t even cover one years’ worth of ISP charges.

It’s true that during the 5 months that ‘Monsters, Inked‘ appeared in our local newspaper we earned some money. £550 in total (though we had to threaten to take them to court before we even received that!). But it was quickly swallowed up in a much-needed new computer for Vince. Our Greys strips were becoming more and more complex, and taking too long to render, so we had little choice if we wanted to keep turning out our comics at a reasonable rate. Therefore, despite a nominal “profit” that year, the ISP charges still came out of Mark’s personal account.

This past year, however, we’ve been drawing the ‘Elvie‘ comic strip for Linux Voice magazine. It’s been a breath of fresh air for us. The team are responsive and friendly — and pay us on time. This has allowed us an unprecedented amount of financial freedom, so this year we have:

  • Actually paid for our ISP charges out of our profits, not Mark’s bank account!
  • Bought a Wacom Intuos graphics tablet for Vince, to replace the £35 budget tablet that was used to draw the first 13 Elvie strips.
  • Made a donation of $150 to the Inkscape hackfest.

That last item wiped out the last of our profit for the year, but we felt it was important to give what we could. We’ve used Inkscape almost every day for six years, and every single one of our comics is, at least partially, created using it. It’s good to finally be in a position to give a little back to help support its development.

We would like to apologise, however, to those fans of ‘The Greys’ who have seen a huge reduction in our output this year, and to anyone who might be hoping that ‘Monsters, Inked’ would come out of hiatus at some point. The fact is that our personal circumstances have changed over the years, and we just don’t have the same number of spare hours available as we once did. Obviously the paying gig takes priority, with our other comics — as dear to us as they are — having to take second place. We are still working on ‘The Greys’, albeit rather slowly, and we would like to resurrect ‘Monsters, Inked’ one day, if only to finish the ongoing plot we’ve started.

As we continue in our second year of ‘Elvie’ strips we’ve started to find our feet, and they’re becoming a little easier to write and draw. Honestly, some of the early strips were re-drawn so many times that it’s amazing that we ever hit our deadlines! Hopefully the second year will see a little more time freed up to get on with our other projects.

If you want to see more Greys strips, the best thing you can do is to support the ones that already exist. Comment on them, tweet about them, re-post them to other sites. ‘Like’ our Facebook posts and re-tweet our announcements – this really helps them get seen by more people. The more we see people getting excited about our comics, the more excited we become, and then creating them is less of an unpaid chore and more of an interesting hobby.

Oh, and keep buying Linux Voice, of course, so that we can keep paying the ISP charges from our profits, not our pockets!
