This is a direct sequel to our previous comic, “Mecha”. In fact this comic started out as Mecha’s Easter Egg but just grew too large to hide away from the world. So we spun it out into a strip of its own.

Having chosen an Aliens-style cargo lifter as the basis of our mecha design, it was quite obvious what the opening line of this strip should be – if only as a tribute to Sigourney Weaver’s wonderful performance as Ripley in the Alien saga.

The Red Dwarf episode “Polymorph” – which is itself a parody of the Alien franchise – presented us with the line from the second panel. The original “Let’s get out there and twat it!” was modified slightly to suit our scene. As with the original quote, the phrase “twat it” is used in the colloquial British English form meaning “hit it violently”.

The title of “The Spider’s From Mars” is obviously a reference to David Bowie’s classic album, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars”, though I’ll admit that we only picked that name because it was the most obvious space-arachnoid related thing we could think of. In practice the spider adheres to the general Hollywood rule of thumb that evil nemeses are English – which is why he has the voice of Terry-Thomas.
